Installing and opening
Won't open, blank window, or a WebView2 error
The app needs the Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime to draw its interface. Windows 10 / 11 normally ship with it; install it by hand if it is missing.
Steps
- Download the Evergreen Bootstrapper directly: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkId=2124703 (the file is
MicrosoftEdgeWebView2Setup.exe). It is also on Microsoft's download page. - Run it.
- Start MapleLink again.
SmartScreen says "unrecognized app"
The app has no commercial code-signing certificate, so Windows has no reputation record for it. This is not a virus warning.
Fix
Check the SHA256 as described on the download page, then click "More info" and "Run anyway".
Windows protected your PC
Microsoft Defender SmartScreen prevented an unrecognized app from starting. Running this app might put your PC at risk.
My antivirus flags it
Third-party launchers are often misclassified: this one starts another process, injects a DLL (locale emulation) and touches the clipboard.
Fix
Once the SHA256 matches, add the file to your antivirus allow list. If the SHA256 does not match, delete the file immediately.
My accelerator does not see the app
Some accelerators only recognise Beanfun.exe.
Fix
Rename MapleLink.exe to Beanfun.exe; nothing else changes. The app also offers to do this on first launch:
MAPLELINKSigning in
It says "no auth key in response" or "missing akey in response URL"
A failed sign-in shows a red line above the sign-in button, "Invalid credentials: login failed: no auth key in response", or a toast at the bottom right, "missing akey in response URL". Both mean the same thing: Beanfun did not hand back a sign-in token. There are two causes, and the message alone cannot tell them apart.
Invalid credentials: login failed: no auth key in response
Fix
- Rule out a wrong password first: sign in on the website with the same credentials, at https://hk.beanfun.com/ for an HK account or https://tw.beanfun.com/ for TW. If that fails too, reset the password there.
- If the website works, it is the connection node: see the next question.
- If both are fine and it still fails, Beanfun's servers are usually having a moment; wait a few minutes.
What a bad connection node looks like
With an accelerator or VPN, an unstable node or one Beanfun rejects shows up in three ways: "failed to extract session key (no OTP1 span)" above the sign-in button; the website's verification alert ("感謝您的配合,您的資料已驗證成功…") coming back every time you press OK; or Request timeout: https://tw.beanfun.com/…default.aspx?service=999999_T0.
Invalid credentials: failed to extract session key (no OTP1 span)
感謝您的配合,您的資料已驗證成功,
請您於五分鐘內再次輸入您的帳號密碼進行驗證登入。!
Fix
- Change node: pick another node in the accelerator or VPN; if you can connect directly, turn it off and try again.
- Accelerator users, make sure the app is renamed to
Beanfun.exe: accelerators route by process name, so an unrenamed MapleLink is not recognised and its traffic never goes through the node. See "My accelerator does not see the app" above. - For the endless verification loop, close the app after changing node, reopen it and sign in again.
The image CAPTCHA keeps failing
The app solves image CAPTCHAs itself and falls back to manual entry after repeated failures.
Fix
Type the code in the window that appears. If it keeps failing, Beanfun's servers are usually having a moment; try again later.
TW password sign-in is stuck on reCAPTCHA
Regular TW password sign-in requires a reCAPTCHA.
Fix
The app opens a small window for you to complete it and continues on its own afterwards. If the window never appears, sign in with a QR code or GamaPass instead.
Starting the game
Nothing happens when I press PLAY
Usually the game path is unset or wrong.
Fix
Open Toolbox → Settings and check the folder containing MapleStory.exe. The app tries to detect it first; pick it by hand if that fails.
Game
Appearance
The game shows garbled text or will not start
This happens when the system locale is not Traditional Chinese.
Fix
The app detects the system locale and, when it is not Traditional Chinese, launches the game through Locale Remulator by itself; there is no switch. If text is still garbled, confirm the game path first, then report it on GitHub Issues with the log.
Accounts and data
My accounts vanished on a new PC
Credentials live in %APPDATA%\com.maplelink.app\accounts.dat, encrypted with Windows DPAPI and bound to the original PC and Windows account, so they cannot simply be copied.
Fix
On the old PC open Toolbox → Account Manager and click "Export data"; on the new one click "Import data".
Where do my passwords go
Nowhere but your PC. Remembered credentials are written to %APPDATA%\com.maplelink.app\accounts.dat, encrypted with Windows DPAPI, and are never sent to the developers. Signing in talks only to Beanfun's own servers.
About the project
How is MapleLink different from Beanfun
Both are maintained side by side by the same people. MapleLink is built for MapleStory players only and rewritten from scratch; new techniques and sign-in fixes land here first. Beanfun aims to support every Gamania game. See pungin/Beanfun#323.
